Community Conversations: Sanctuary
Please join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary, Sanctuary, on Saturday, September 12, 2:00-4:30pm at Providence Church on Daniel Island.
Sanctuary is a feature-length film that exposes the plight of LGBTQIA+ individuals within modern faith systems—told through the eyes of a visionary architect whose passion project becomes a lifeline. As doctrine collides with identity, a sacred space rises from rejection, offering refuge and hope.
The event kicks off Community Conversations, a series of dialogues on topics relevant to living a modern life through the lens of faith. Immediately following the screening, the audience is invited to a panel discussion including filmmakers Autumn McAlpin and Vienna Boyes, along with Stan Mitchell, a Nashville, TN pastor quoted in the film, Jensen Smith of AFFA (Alliance for Full Acceptance), and Providence Church pastor Dan Freemyer.

Q: Is this film appropriate for my child/teen?
A: Due to mature themes, including references to suicide and mental health duress faced by some members of the LGBTQIA+ community, this film may not be suitable for sensitive audiences and children. Q: Can I bring friends and neighbors?
A: Of course! You are encouraged to bring friends and neighbors who are interested in learning more about LGBTQIA+ inclusion in faith communities. Just make sure they register!
Q: Is there a fee to attend?
A: No. This is a free event. If you would like to make a donation to help offset the cost of hosting events like this, you can click here or make a donation in person during the event. We’re asking that you register to ensure enough seating and refreshments for everyone.
Q: Will there be an intermission?
A: We’ll take a brief break after the film (98 minute runtime) before the panel discussion starts. You’ll have time to use the restroom, stretch your legs, and grab some refreshments.
Q: Will the panel take questions from the audience?
A: Yes! So feel free to jot down a question or two as you watch the film.
