Psongs for the Journey: A Lenten Playlist
Every good road trip needs a great playlist. If selected carefully, music not only helps pass the time during the long miles, but also sets the tone for the entire journey. Depending upon what we need at the time, music can inspire us, help us think deeper, bolster our courage, stimulate conversation, encourage rest, fire us up, and even get us dancing.
Lent is a journey: a road trip from Ash Wednesday right up to the brink of Easter. Along the way, we remember the gospel story: the times when Jesus greets the palm-waving crowd, tosses temple tables, teaches in that same temple, gets betrayed, eats with friends, washes their feet, goes on trial, gets convicted, is executed and buried.
If done well, Lent is also a journey through our own acknowledgment of failings, confession, repentance, renewal and restoration. For these six weeks of Lent, our playlist is the original mixtape: the Psalms. Each Sunday we will be guided in worship by the unique sounds and messages of a different Psalm. So, here take my other earbud and let’s listen together to Psongs for the Journey: A Lenten Playlist.
