Seeking Warming Shelter Volunteers
The City of Charleston is hosting an overnight shelter at the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center (265 Fishburne Street) this winter for homeless persons during dangerously low temperatures. The shelter is activated with 48 hours notice if the wind chill is expected to be 35ºF or below (also adjusted for rain).
A collaboration of churches on Daniel Island including Providence, St. Claire of Assisi, Holy Cross, One Fellowship and Point Hope Presbyterian are jointly recruiting volunteers to be on standby to help during the week of February 14-20, 2021 should the shelter be activated. Please consider volunteering by accessing the link below to register and complete the required background check.
Volunteer needs are: set-up (6-8 pm), registering and hosting guests (8-10:30 pm), serving meals (7:30-9:30 pm), serving breakfast (5:30-7:00 am), and clean-up (6-8 am). Police staff the shelter during overnight hours, so no volunteers are needed to spend the night. All CDC-issued COVID precautions will be observed.
Food is also needed for 50 persons each night of activation. Casseroles, BBQ, etc. can be prepared even by those by those not volunteering in person at the shelter and local restaurants are also invited to help.
Any and all are welcome to volunteer by registering here.
