Providence Talks About Race
As a response to recent events in our country, Providence will be participating in and offering several opportunities to learn about combating racism as people of faith. We encourage you to join us in as many ways as you are able.
Did you miss the Zoom call with David Richardson? Not to worry. You can watch the recording by clicking here.
An online book study of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi, led by Irie and Ryon Price will be July 29-September 2 each Wednesday at 7pm EDT. Irie, a Black writer and teacher, and her husband Ryon, the White pastor of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX, will lead this study. Providence has been invited to join Broadway, Baker Chapel AME, and other interested congregants. Click this link to Register for the Study. If you have any difficulty registering, contact Dan Freemyer and he will sign you up. In addition to participating in the study live on Zoom, a recording of each session will be available to view any time in case you miss a night or if you are not available on Wednesday evenings. The Anita Flowers Book Club is also reading How to Be An Antiracist for their August 25 club meeting, which you are also invited to join with a link shared closer to the meeting. Order your copy of the book today through the Turning Page Bookshop (a local Black-owned bookstore), or other outlets.
The Next Question is a Video Web Series on Topics of Race and Justice led by Austin Channing Brown. Sign up here to join with a group of 6-8 Providence folks to view these 8 episodes together (online) weekly, each followed by a time for facilitated conversation. The number of groups and the meeting times will be determined by the people who sign up. Since we are not confined by geography, please invite other friends, neighbors, and family from Charleston and beyond.
